Essay assignment: Archaeological Site

Please read the attached formal paper guidelines carefully!!!

For this essay, students will be required to choose an archaeological site which they will be researching. The information required is listed below.

This will be an in-depth study, 3-5 full pages of information, on one particular archaeological site. Write a paragraph, properly cited, (Author, date), for each topic to be covered. Each topic needs to be explained with examples if appropriate. This is to be an archaeological study of the site, not a travelogue on the park. This essay must be spell checked and grammar checked.

Information on the site must include:

Introduction to the site, what is it? (5 points)

Location: What country and where it is within the country. Are there any unique factors that affect why it was built at that location; (such as mountain top for protection, riverbank for trade, and so on). (10 points)

Discovery: Who rediscovered the site for modern day analysis? How was it found? What happened as a result? (10 points)

Dating of the site: What methods and testing was done to date the site? (15 points)

History of the site: When and how was it built? How has it been used throughout the years? (15 points)

Cultural significance of the site (10 points)

Religious significance of the site (10 points)

Methods of excavation: what has been done, or is being done on the site? (10 points)

Methods of preservation being used: How is it being preserved today? Why is it necessary? (10points)

Conclusion (5 points)

No more than one short quote, less than one line, not one sentence, allowed.

Minimum of 5 references, one must be a book other than you text. References must be included with proper format. (5 points)

For the purposes of this class, DO NOT USE .COM/.NET sources! They are often inaccurate and unreliable. Any work submitted with these references will have ten points deducted for each of these sites! Use only .edu, .org, .gov references! I suggest you begin with an actual book, an encyclopedia. Ten points will be deducted for not including an actual book source, not an online book. If Wikipedia or any similar site is used, it is considered one reference. Each page of the site is like a page in a book and cannot be counted separately.

Each of these is a UNESCO Heritage Site. That would be the best place to begin your search. (United Nations Educational Scientific & Cultural Organization) From this site you can connect to numerous additional references.

You must cover one of the sites from the list below!
